Statement of Need

Accidental death rates in children have remained stagnant over the past 20 years, with bystander CPR rates still far too low to improve outcomes meaningfully. Traditional CPR training—especially in-person courses—varies widely in quality and often fails to provide adequate instruction on pediatric-specific resuscitation skills. Many caregivers take a CPR course only once and experience rapid skill decay without reinforcement. Additionally, confusion around differing guidelines from the American Heart Association (AHA) and American Red Cross (ARC) creates uncertainty that can hinder action in emergencies. Caregivers also face logistical barriers to accessing consistent, high-quality, and family-centered training.

This virtual course addresses those gaps by offering evidence-based, pediatric-focused education built on ILCOR guidelines, with clear explanations of differences between AHA and ARC protocols. Unlike other widely marketed programs—many of which are led by non-clinicians or influencers—this course is uniquely developed and delivered by a board-certified emergency medicine physician and certified AHA/ARC instructor. It combines foundational learning with ongoing refresher emails and scenario-based content to promote skill retention over time. By reducing barriers and confusion, and reinforcing training regularly, this program aims to improve caregiver competence and confidence in managing pediatric emergencies.

Learning Objectives

Demonstrate evidence-based, pediatric-specific CPR techniques, including modifications for infants and young children, in accordance with current ILCOR recommendations.

Implement strategies to maintain CPR skill retention over time, including participation in scenario-based practice and the use of periodic refresher content designed to counteract skill decay.

Recognize the impact of low bystander CPR rates on pediatric accidental death outcomes and articulate the importance of caregiver preparedness in improving survival rates.

Target audience

This activity is designed for parents, caregivers, grandparents, nannies, babysitters, healthcare

professionals, those who need CPR certification for their work, and anyone who just wants to have a better understanding of what to do for CPR, choking, and drowning

The intended audience includes: Physicians, Nurses and NPs, Physician Assistants, Pharmacists, Social Workers, Dentists, Athletic Trainers, Dietitians and Nutrition Professionals, Athletic Trainers, Other Allied Health Professionals, and the general public.
